Rosa Maria was born and raised in Costa Rica. Throughout her career, her Latina roots have fundamentally shaped and influenced her artistic vision. She has worked across a variety of media, but the common theme of her art remains the observation of the ever changing interplay between the values instilled by Latin American culture and those prized by cultures within the United States.
Building upon her background, she studied at the Rudolph Schaeffer School of Design, with a curriculum strictly adhering to a Bauhaus ideas. Rosa Maria used this education as an Interior Designer and Colorist in her own design firm; she worked on a variety of residential and commercial projects throughout Northern California. In addition, Rosa Maria was able to pursue jewelry design, offering pieces in galleries across California as well as the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco and the San Jose Museum of Art. She has also been recognized for her talents in designing and producing stained glass, displaying at both group and solo exhibitions at galleries within San Francisco.
Rosa Maria’s current projects focus on capturing the waste that urban society leaves behind, and the message being conveyed by it. Her photographs are taken across Mexico and the American West, exploring the differences and similarities between these cultures through the detritus they leave behind. By photographing the contents of public and private bins and scattered litter throughout the urban landscape, she intends to provide an intimate insight into the everyday lives and values of city residents.
Overall, the trash being left behind exposes how culture and socio-economic status effect what is or is not important in people’s lives; we see their care or indifference to their environment. By looking at features such as quantity, day of the week, products or packaging, the viewer can begin to understand the underlying values of a wide variety of modern urban residents. This ongoing project offers viewers a chance to understand humanity in their urban setting and the incidental beauty we create.
